Building Electrification
Moving to fossil-free, all-electric homes and buildings can lower the cost of new housing and protect the health and safety of Colorado families, all while tackling a major source of climate pollution. Communities deserve clean and affordable heat and electricity.
Clean Heat
Every day, Xcel Energy (Xcel) pumps polluting fossil gas into the homes and businesses of 1.5 million customers in Colorado. That system may have worked in the past, but the time has come to transition toward a smarter, all-electric system that saves money long-term and future-proofs our grid as the world moves away from polluting fossil fuels.
In early 2026, Xcel proposed a Gas Infrastructure Plan (GIP) which laid out the utility’s forecasted investments in methane gas infrastructure over the coming years. The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) declined to approve much of the GIP citing concerns that the company is biased by its profit motive to spend more money on infrastructure that does not benefit customers or align with Colorado’s climate objectives in June 2026. As Xcel executives are making millions of dollars each year, customer complaints and service disconnections have increased. Learn more on this decision and the Sierra Club's response here.
