Plastic Recycling - Every Wednesday @ 2:30pm
On Wednesdays, our Headwaters Group partners with the Summit County Rotary Club to reduce the amount of plastic going into our landfill. We will assist in collecting, sorting, and delivering plastic wrapping for recycling.
Volunteers meet at 2:30 pm every Wednesday at the Summit High School cafeteria and work for 1-1.5 hrs. Regular volunteers are, of course, desired. But anyone who can help occasionally will be greatly appreciated too. Headwaters Group volunteers will also sign-in, so that we get proportional credit for the plastic we help process.
The plastic is currently collected from local furniture stores and a paint store. They generate huge amounts of plastic wrap that comes on mattresses, other furniture, and paint can pallets. It is usually clean, but there are always some labels and tape to be removed. The plastic is then bundled up and delivered to City Market, who trucks it to Denver for recycling.
Rest assured this plastic WILL be recycled as this product is a primary component of Trex decking! As an incentive, Trex builds sidewalk and trailside benches out of this material and gives plastic collecting groups like the Rotary Club - and now our Headwaters Group - one bench per year for collecting a thousand pounds or more. The Rotary is currently delivering about 80-150 lbs. of plastic per week, and has already diverted over 12,000 pounds from the landfill!
So in addition to keeping tons of plastic out of our landfill, benches with Sierra Club donation plaques attached could provide more community visibility.
This program is currently limited to three retailers in Frisco, but with more hands involved, there is great potential for expansion!
