Outings

See our current scheduled trips in the list/calendar below.

We will be adding service projects, cleanups, day trips and family trips to our schedule this year. We are looking for some new volunteer leaders, too.

Call for volunteer leaders

If you led trips for Miami Outings before and have a favorite you would like to share, please let me know. If you have moved here recently, and were a Sierra Outing Leader previously, consider being a leader for the Miami Group. We have plenty of history of outings, and can tell you about the parks and help you plan for trips in South Florida. If you were a scout leader, we would love to hear from you. Our leaders have to go through our training sessions and first aid training, and we can arrange for you to attend. Send an email to Mark.Walters@sierraclub.org today. We need you!

Outings we have offered before and would like to offer again include day hikes, cleanups and family trips.

Day Hikes: One day hikes within a 100 miles radius of Miami are possible year-round. The more popular destinations include the Anhinga and Gumbo Limbo trails in the Florida Everglades, Arch Creek and Oleta River State parks, Biscayne Nature Center and Biscayne National Park. These trips are great for discovering local nature stops, understanding the effects man has on the local environment, and for meeting people who share a love of the natural settings of South Florida.

Biking: There is always an abundance of wildlife when the Miami Group rides Shark Valley in the Florida Everglades. This wonderful place, with its alligators, beautiful birds and wildlife gives you a peak at the "River of Grass"

Canoeing/Kayaking: There are great rivers and lakes and streams for canoeing or kayaking in South Florida. We have had trips to Oleta River State Park, the Loxahatchee River, Peace River, Fisheating Creek, Horse Creek, and to Indian Key State Historic Site in the Florida Keys.

What you need to know

There are no passengers on our trips, only participants. Our outings are listed as Leisure, Moderate, or Strenuous. Be realistic about your physical condition and the degree of challenge you enjoy. Come ready to paddle or hike and share the work. Family trips are open to everyone.

All participants are required to sign a standard liability waiver. If you would like to read the Liability Waiver before you choose to participate in an outing, contact the leader of the outing or go to www.sierraclub.org/outings/chapter/forms

Check with leader to see what you need to bring. Trip participants need to furnish their own tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and personal gear. Once you have made a reservation, we ask that you make a serious commitment to attend the trip. Cancellations are detrimental to our program. Our outings leaders are unpaid volunteers.

If you are interested in a trip, call/email the trip leader and ask for details or come to the signup table at the general meetings.

For details and discussion of the outings, come to our general meetings or contact our Outings Chair, Mark Walters, mark.walters@sierraclub.org. Contact the trip leaders for details on a specific trip, ratings, costs, and supplies. Most trips have a suggested donation to cover our costs.

In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.
