Getting Involved in ICO is Easy!
There are many ways to participate in ICO activities. We welcome anyone who loves nature and working with children. You can become a certified leader or just come to help with outings.
Typically, volunteers go on one outing per month, though it isn't required. We also appreciate anyone who loves to work behind the scenes with administration or our fundraising events. If you want to know more about how to get involved, please email Paula Flores (pflores@gpinet.com)
All volunteers are required to become Sierra Club members and to fill out a Volunteer Application. Once each year, you will be asked to complete an online course on Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention (CARP). There are no other requirements unless you want to become a certified leader.
Becoming a Certified Leader
Our ICO leaders are nature lovers with an adventurous spirit and a love of children. There are a few requirements to becoming an outing leader. Mostly you need to be fired up about providing a quality experience for the children in wild, natural places. We are always looking for individuals with experience in canoeing, hiking, and/or skills or knowledge pertaining to the natural world.
All volunteers who want to become certified leaders take an online Sierra Club course called Outings Leader Training (OLT). It takes about 3 to 5 hours to complete. You also need to be first aid/CPR certified -- a certification available at your local Red Cross. We will also perform a background check, as required by law.
