I am a Tampa Bay area native. My father taught me an appreciation for the outdoors at our home near the Hillsborough River State Park. I also learned my first trade from him as a craftsman working residential and mega-yacht construction until graduating the University of South Florida with a Bachelor’s in History. Later, I attained a Masters Degree in International Relations.
I joined the Marine Corps and was commissioned in August 2001 and earning my wings as a naval aviator in 2003. As an officer, my leadership roles varied widely from leading 300 Marine maintenance division to planning and executing Marine Corps operations in Europe. Over two decades of service around the world, I have seen the beneficial impact of environmental stewardship to societies when done correctly. But I have also witnessed the devastation of the environment, individuals, and communities when societies fail to protect natural spaces.
Having spent time away from the Bay area, the impacts of growth and climate change are not a collection of scientific factoids for me. Instead, they are a daily reminder of what we have lost. Many of the forests and open spaces that I spent my childhood exploring are now subdivisions and condos. I will never be able to share them with my children. When I canoe the Hillsborough River with my children, there are no bass or blue gill to see or tease onto a lure. They have been replaced by the invasive African catfish. Many of our wells that used to run with crystal clear and pure water are now contaminated with PFAS (if they run at all).
I would appreciate the opportunity to “repurpose” the organizational and leadership skills I honed in the military to protect and preserve our irreplaceable natural resources for my children and grandchildren.

I joined Sierra Club shortly after I settled in the Tampa Bay Area in 2009, after looking for a way to donate to organizations that foster sustainable and mindful living. I knew I could trust the Sierra Club name and organization because of their national presence, and because of a couple trips to Yosemite in the 2000s, from which I learned of John Muir.
When I learned about the Stadium Recycling program in 2012, I began volunteering regularly with it since I live close to RayJay Stadium. 2 years ago, after taking on additional responsibilities with the RayJay Recycling program, and seeing a concerning 60 minutes episode about the deteriorating state of Earth, I was compelled to become more active in the local Tampa Bay Group.
I am an early adopter of solar and electric vehicles, and have an overall appreciation of sustainable and simple living. I enjoy playing guitar and jogging and have spent my adult working life on performing qualifications, programming, and technical writing of industrial water systems. I just started an LLC this past year to continue work in that field for many years, but I find my involvement in Sierra Club, and other local non-profit organizations, having a more positive impact on community and humanity.

So many retires don’t know what to do with themselves after they retire, so I consider myself lucky to have found such gratifying work and people to work with.

For the last 8 years as Conservation Committee Chair of the Tampa Bay Group, I have enjoyed meeting you all who are so interested in protecting our environment. I have learned from and been inspired by many of you protecting Florida’s beautiful places and standard of living. Together, we have enjoined many successes. We have stopped environmental harmful development and stopped the proposed Tampa Toilet to TAP project. I am also a member of the Sierra Club Florida Chapter Conservation Committee, which works on issues such as saving our state parks from golf courses. I have been honored to receive the 2023 Sierra Club Volunteer Achievement Award and the 2022 Black Bear Award from the Tampa Bay Group. I look forward to working with you all to continue our advocacy with the City, County, State and Industry to protect our environment for everyone.
