Savannah River Group members serve residents in Augusta, GA and surrounding areas. We have focused most of our conservation activities on Savannah River issues. We are part of the Sierra Club, America's oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Join in and help us protect the Central Savannah River Area!
Activities and Events
Our monthly programs are free and open to the public. We offer hybrid monthly meetings where you have the option to join in person or on Zoom. To join us in person we meet at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 3501 Walton Way Extension, Augusta 30909. To join us on Zoom you must RSVP in advance at the link listed for each meeting. After you RSVP, you will receive a Zoom link via email.

Descr: This moderate 5.6 mile trail in Sumter National Forest traverses open pineland and damaged hardwood bottoms. Certain areas of the trail are managed for Quail habitat. We will eat lunch by Lick Fork. To register, go to:

[Outing] Hike Augusta Riverwalk & 5th St. Pedestrian Bridge - Mar 21
| Date: Saturday, March 21, 2026 Time: 10:00 am Place: 6 James Brown Blvd, Augusta, GA 30901 |
Descr: The estimated 3.0 mile looped multi-level brick trail spans from 5th to 13th Streets along the banks of the Savannah River and serves as the front porch to the city. Hike distance includes the 1,201 foot long 5th Street pedestrian bridge out and back trail connecting Augusta to North Augusta. The bridge allows us to safely cross the river and see some amazing views along the way. End the hike with a group lunch at Boll Weevil Café at noon. Add a visit to the Augusta Museum of Art or History Museum on your own and make a day of it! Notes:

[Outing] "Paddle Augusta Canal" - Mar 28

Level: 5.5 miles downstream Descr: Join us on the Augusta Canal for an enjoyable 5.5-mile paddle starting from the Savannah Rapids Kayak Rental where our paddle is registered for the day. Notes:

[Outing] "Heggie's Rock Hike" - Apr 4
| Date: Saturday, April 11, 2026

Descr: See the rock pools covered in red sedum as well as lichen and moss mounds that look like alien landscapes. This large protected piedmont granite outcropping located in Columbia County, Georgia is the home of several rare and endangered plants found no where else. It was named a National Natural Landmark in 1980 and was purchased by the Georgia Nature Conservancy in 1983. Rising 70 feet above the surrounding area, the rock is a geological wonder. We will view the unique and endangered plants with Cathy Black. Because of the limited parking we will meet at 9am at Patriots Park and carpool from there promptly at 9:15. Because this site is so fragile, we must limit visitors to 15. Bring water and Closed-toed shoes - both are required. Sorry, no dogs or walking sticks. Registration is required (see below). Notes:

[Outing] "Hike North Augusta Greeneway /Brick Pond Park Trails" - Apr 26

Descr: Hike approximately 3.5 - 4 miles of the 7+ mile trail along paved, board walk and dirt trails as it moves along the river and deviates to pass through scenic parts of the local community. Several places to buy lunch following the hike if interested. Meet at 9:45 for 10am departure. To register, go to:

Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) monitoring
Conservation Chair Frank Carl leads stream monitoring outings for our local creeks and rivers.
Generally, the outings include testing streams' pH,
dissolved oxygen, temperature, phosphate levels, and the presence of E. Coli, as well as habitat
availability, stream flow, and macroinvertebrates.
Upcoming meetings:
Apr 4, 6, and 7 at 8:30am-12:00pm:
Savannah River Group has adopted 10 streams in Richmond and Columbia counties which are monitored every month for pollution levels as indicated by dissolved O2, pH, phosphate, temperature and macro-invertebrates. Come join us and be a part of the monitoring of your fresh water streams.

Documentary: "Hyde Park"
Filmmaker and director Michelle Hansen is developing a documentary about Hyde Park, an African American community in Augusta, GA, where residents fall ill from industrial contaminants. Surrounded by seven industrial facilities and without funds to relocate, the citizens become ativists pursuing justice with a grit that will inspire thousands of U.S. communities facing environmental racism.
