Our Mission
StopClearcuttingCA is a campaign supported by Sierra Club California and the Sierra Club Grassroots Network, a coalition of volunteer-led teams tackling forest-related environmental issues across local, national, and global levels.
Originally, the campaign sought to educate solely about the dangers of clearcutting, which is reflected in its name. However, as new threats to forest ecosystems have emerged, it has broadened its focus. Our efforts now encompass all environmentally harmful forest management practices and the need to protect our remaining natural, biodiverse forests. Because wildfires, including forest fires, pose an increasing threat to people and communities, we are also promoting proven community and people-focused solutions that enhance wildfire resilience.
Our most powerful tool is our voice. We use it to educate the public and policymakers while amplifying the voices of communities and allies.
StopClearcuttingCA is committed to promoting sustainable and responsible forest management while protecting our remaining legacy forests and public lands. The campaign opposes unproven forest thinning for wildfire mitigation, and advocates for proven methods such as home hardening, defensible space, and community preparedness. It also calls for an end to public funding for woody biomass incineration, which is highly polluting and removes carbon from our wildlands.
Founded almost two decades ago, the StopClearcuttingCA is operated by volunteers from all walks of life who share a passion for natural, biodiverse forests. It includes many long-time forest defenders, scientists, and community organizers, and is supported by an intern and by Sierra Club California staff.
Each month, StopClearcutting gathers diverse voices for its Forest Protection Forums, where scientists and activists come together to spotlight the vital impact of forests and the pressing threats they face. These forums are not just lectures; they are vibrant discussions that spark ideas and forge strategies for meaningful conservation efforts.
The campaign’s commitment to protecting California's natural landscapes extends beyond these forums. It produces an array of materials designed to educate and engage the public. Fact sheets distill complex information into digestible bites, making the research accessible to everyone. Curated opinion pieces, newspaper articles, and scientific research papers inform breaking news about forests.
Having embraced the digital age, StopClearcuttingCA amplifies its message through vibrant social media outreach, encouraging people to join the conversation and take action.
Letters to the editor and blogs, crafted with precision and passion by the campaign’s writing team, aim to sway public opinion and galvanize support for forest protection initiatives.
