Sierra Club Maryland Chapter Announces
First Round of Endorsements for General Assembly

Candidates Have Proven Records and Leadership for the Environment

(Riverdale, MD) Today the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter released its first round in a series of candidate endorsements for the Maryland General Assembly in the 2022 state primary elections. The organization said the 23 Senate and 64 House candidates (list attached) all have proven records and leadership on environmental issues.

“Endorsing candidates is an integral part of achieving our bold policy agenda. We are excited to build relationships with these incumbents and their colleagues over the next four years to elect a climate-conscious majority to serve us in Annapolis,” said Rosa Hance, chair of the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter.

“These Sierra Club endorsements for incumbents are based on proven environmental leadership,” said Maryland Political Chair Rich Norling. “The Sierra Club has a national policy that encourages endorsement of current elected officials who have strong records for the environment, and we expect to continue working closely with these legislators in the next four years to protect and improve the environment in which we all live.”

Norling indicated that court cases about legislative district boundaries had delayed the organization’s endorsement decisions. “We have been evaluating candidates for several months, and now that candidates have filed to be on the ballot we expect to be releasing more endorsements in the coming weeks.”

“This 2022 election year is our opportunity to elect state and county officials who will shape Maryland’s direction for at least the next decade. These candidates will be on the ballot in the July 19 primary election.”

Before each state election, Sierra Club volunteers evaluate candidates through research, comprehensive questionnaires, and thorough interviews. The Sierra Club Maryland Chapter endorses candidates for statewide, General Assembly, and county offices. Sierra Club volunteers then help contact voters in support of those candidates who will protect and improve the environment.

More endorsements will be released in the coming weeks and months. Please follow us on social media @sierraclubmd for more up to date environmental endorsements.
