"Green" Burials Presentation
Although none of us like to think about the fact that we won't always be here, Sierra Club Catoctin Group hosted the co-founders of Morris Orchard on May 21 at Attaboy Beer for a conversation about natural burial. It was fascinating to learn about options that have only recently become available for us to continue making a positive impact on our planet even after we're gone. Located on a 65-year-old chestnut orchard, Morris Orchard is the first natural burial ground in Frederick County. Natural burial practices at the Orchard are designed to minimize environmental impact, support healthy ecosystems and create a lasting legacy of stewardship for generations to come. If you missed our talk, call of visit the Orchard, or stay tuned for a possible future field trip!
Frederick County Master Gardeners Earth Fest
Sierra Club Catoctin Group hosted a table at EarthFest 2026 on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Presented by the Master Gardeners of Frederick County, Earthfest is a celebration of our relationship with the natural world. This was an opportunity for folks to learn about the Master Gardener and 4-H programs, other local nonprofits, and relevant Frederick County government agencies. This family-friendly event included many activities geared towards children, such as flower crafts, Buzzin' Through the Garden, and Storytime in the Garden. There were displays inside and outside the University of Maryland Extension Building and tours of the Demonstration Gardens.
Roadside Litter Cleanups in Frederick and Carroll Counties
Sierra Club Catoctin Group held two litter cleanups this Spring, one in Frederick County and one in Carroll. We are continuing to collect data showing how much our state would benefit from a Bottle Bill. From these two cleanups, at least 8 bags of litter might not have been necessary if Maryland passed the Beverage Container Deposit and Litter Reduction Bill. It didn't happen during this past legislative session, but we will try again next year! So please join our fight and let your state legislators know you support this bill.
