We hope you caught the local coverage that Enbridge spilled 70,000 gallons of oil in Wisconsin last month on its Line 6 oil pipeline.
Enbridge - a multinational corporation - has a history of devastating leaks in the region and more than dismal safety record. In spite of these devastating spills - including spills in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Enbridge has been given further support with a reroute approval for its Line 5. Similar to Line 6, the current pipeline route Line 5, which is also opposed by groups in Michigan, also threatens the straits of Mackinac, natural resources, and operates bucking compliance with major treaty rights.
After the Bad River band appealed the recent reroute of Line 5, other organizations like Sierra Club have also filed suits to hold the oil giant accountable for its lack of accountability in its operations, prompting the lawsuit in response to the 70,000-gallon leak in Wisconsin. These types of legal actions coupled with grassroots organizing are ways Sierra Club and others in our coalition are aiming to work across communities, states and nations to move beyond oil and avoid oil or water spills in the tens of thousands of gallons across Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and beyond.
In Minnesota, we meet the fourth Monday of each month, and have plans to hold bad actors accountable, present policy to move beyond oil, and advocate for water protection and cleaner forms of energy.
