The team discussed this short article about Joseph Tainter's "The Collapse of Complex Societies". Mr. Tainter will be one of the keynote speakers at the Summit. Summary: Societies develop complexity in order to solve problems, but get diminishing returns with increasing complexity. Empires take energy from others as they develop complexity. But there is no simpler society to take over upon our collapse because we’re a global society. Tainter doesn’t say if there’s a society that has been saved by deliberate simplification. Jason Hickle in “Less is More” draws on Tainter to talk about economic collapse.
Team leadership/roles: The team discussed roles and possible people to fill them. Need to determine them by November. Positions are team chair, new volunteer liaison, communications liaison, and operations & coordinating team member. Nominate yourself…or someone else.
