The national Sierra Club put out the following statement on January 8th:
The Sierra Club and all of civil society depend on free speech, peaceful assembly, and a functioning democracy to create a brighter future for us all. Every single day, our organization and 3.4 million members and supporters rely on our Constitutional right to speak up and speak out about the issues impacting our environment, our communities, and our democracy.
There are moments that require us all to rise up and speak out. This is one of those times. We must speak out in defense of the freedoms we all cherish and the safety we all expect by rejecting the violence and attacks on democracy the Trump Administration is imposing across the country and abroad.
Violence, fear, and danger. That is what the Trump Administration is imposing on our country by deploying armed federal agents to terrorize communities. The Sierra Club strongly condemns ICE's senseless and horrific killing of Renee Nicole Good and the Trump Administration's blatant lies that attempt to not only rewrite the truth but also sow chaos. This is not an isolated incident, as we saw this same playbook with Silverio Villegas González and others. We refuse to let our freedoms and rights disappear. It is incumbent upon all of us to stand up for our democracy and our ability to exercise our rights.
We mourn with Renee Nicole Good’s family and friends, the people in Minnesota, and everyone across the country on these profoundly sad days for our country. As we mourn, we know that we must continue to speak out as the Trump Administration peddles lies and propaganda in an attempt to change the truth. None of us can afford to look away and let what we love about our country disappear.
The Sierra Club stands firm in our commitment to protecting our rights, dignity, and safety.
The North Star Chapter of the Sierra Club collaborated on the national statement and additionally stated:
The North Star Chapter of the Sierra Club stands with our neighbors in demanding ICE out of Minnesota now. We are calling for accountability in the killing of Renee Nicole Good, and an end to ICE actions that are terrorizing our diverse Minnesota communities – from immigrant families to school children and all of us in the communities where they are operating. The federal agent in question should be arrested, charged, and prosecuted.
