Her Outdoor Books is a digital booklist created by a teacher and a librarian in Minnesota  that celebrates stories of women’s outdoor adventures around the world.

This project began from a personal place, when co-creator and librarian Aubree Tillett wanted to learn more about women adventurers and their outdoor experiences. As someone who spends her free time outdoors and is a member of the Sierra Club North Star Chapter, she was seeking representation and inspiration, for both herself and her daughter in books. However, she noticed many of the books about women in the outdoors were difficult to locate. Tillett brought in a co-creator, Olivia Wulf, an English teacher and fellow outdoor enthusiast to collaborate on the creation of a booklist, now known as Her Outdoor Books. Together, they are working to curate a digital booklist featuring nonfiction women’s stories, spanning diverse time periods, outdoor activities, and experiences to share with a broader community.

Her Outdoor Books has been cataloged with the digital platform known as Libib. Viewers can browse the digital booklist to discover titles, book covers, and book descriptions. To access a book’s description, viewers need to click on the book cover, opening the full record; additional information in the full record includes author name, publisher, date of publication, page numbers, ISBN, and OCLC number. The collection currently contains a list of over five hundred stories as of October 2026. Tillett and Wulf will routinely add additional titles to the booklist. Each of the books on the platform are also tagged by outdoor activity. The collection currently has twenty different tags that are searchable, and can be used as a filter in order for readers to find books within their area(s) of interest. Some of the most populated tags include:

  • Hiking/Backpacking: Currently the largest tag within the collection, this category boasts over one hundred stories waiting for readers to discover, including hikes across Tibet, Ethiopia, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, and beyond.
  • Living in Wilderness: The stories within this category focus on people living in remote areas of the planet, often alone, while exploring the natural world around them.
  • Climbing/Mountaineering: Under this tag, readers will find books about women who have climbed and summited mountains all over the world, including Everest, Denali, and Kilimanjaro.

Additional tags include: environmental conservation, running, cycling/biking, canoeing, sailing, anthropological fieldwork, kayaking, skiing, rafting, diving, dogsledding, rowing, snowboarding, surfing, swimming, snowshoeing, and road tripping.

The project continues to grow and evolve, but the mission remains: We want to celebrate and share stories of women who seek outdoor adventure. Check out the Her Outdoor Books digital booklist, or look us up on Instagram at HerOutdoorBooks.
