Learning about the People Not Polluters Campaign and acting this election season. Join us!
I recently joined the Sierra Club as a new volunteer and was excited to join the Sierra Action Night in September that focused on the People Not Polluters campaign. The night emphasized that enforcement matters as much as the laws themselves. By holding agencies and candidates accountable, we can push back against polluter influence and protect our communities and environment.
Key Theme
The event centered on the critical role of state agencies in using existing environmental laws to hold corporate polluters accountable. One concept we discussed was “Polluter Capture”—where corporate polluters have excessive influence over regulatory agencies, impairing enforcement of laws designed to protect clean air, clean water, and public health. Even when laws exist, enforcement is often weak due to political pressure, resource constraints, or inaction.
What We Learned
- Polluter Capture Explained:
- State agencies need to enforce environmental laws, but corporate polluters often shape regulations, delay enforcement, or avoid penalties.
- This creates a system where communities bear the burden of pollution while polluters evade responsibility.
- Critical Issues Highlighted:
- Drinking Water Crisis in Southeast Minneapolis: Local water has become too polluted to safely drink.
- Air Pollution in the Metro: Rising pollution levels are linked to increased rates of cancer and asthma.
- Illegal Timber Management: Wildlife management areas are being exploited for commercial timber production, violating their intended purpose.
- Climate Law Failures: The trash and wood-burning industries are undermining Minnesota’s signature climate law.
- Sulfide-Mine Permits: Current permits pose significant risks to water and ecosystems, with inadequate safeguards.
- Skills for Advocacy:
- Participants discussed strategies for effectively engaging with candidates to prioritize enforcement of environmental laws.
- Focus areas included clean air, clean water, wildlife protection, and climate resilience.
Next Steps & Ways to Get Involved
- Follow Up with Candidates: Reach out to elected officials to demand accountability for enforcing environmental laws.
- Social Media Advocacy: Share messaging and resources for the #PeopleNotPolluters campaign to raise awareness.
- Canvassing & Volunteering: Join a canvassing shift with a candidate or party to advocate for environmental protections.
- Get Out the Vote: Participate in postcard writing or texting parties to mobilize voters around environmental issues.
- Event Planning: Help organize future Sierra Club Action Nights to keep the momentum going.
My Reason
I care so deeply about The People Not Polluters topic because the weight of what we’ve taken from this planet—clean air, thriving ecosystems, and a stable climate—isn’t just a human burden to bear. It’s a debt owed to the animals who share this Earth, who had no hand in the harm but suffer its consequences daily. We’ve reshaped their homes, poisoned their water, and disrupted the balance they depend on. Cleaning up isn’t just about restoring what we’ve broken; it’s about fairness. It’s about giving back to the creatures who’ve been voiceless in this crisis and ensuring that future generations—human and animal alike—inherit a world where survival isn’t a fight.
We need to hold corporate polluters accountable so that we can enforce these laws that are designed to protect clean air, clean water, and public health, that in return positively impact every being on this earth, not just humans. Let’s tell them that profit should not be more important than compliance to keep our earth safe for everyone.
