One of our local volunteers, Tim Pekarek, was recently recognized for his 30 years as a Sierra Club member. That's impressive, but, more importantly, Tim has spent about 25 of those years as an outings leader in the Club's Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) program. Most Sierrans grew up enjoying outdoor adventures. But for some Americans, childhood experiences in nature seem unattainable. ICO is a remedy to that. Originally called "Inner City Outings", the program challenges local volunteers to lead special outings which bring children who, for a variety of circumstances, would not otherwise visit a park, learn about nature or camp overnight. We have had ICO events in the St Louis area for 25 years. Over that time a variety of volunteers have helped, but Tim has been a mainstay. ICO programs across the country help introduce young people to the sights, sounds and the feel of nature. Many studies show that children benefit from being outdoors and developing a sense of the natural world. Experience outdoors helps build well rounded citizens and maybe even future Sierra Club leaders. Thanks to Tim and all other ICO volunteers.
