Volkswagen emissions scandal– NJ could lose $65 million

by Gary Frederick, Chair, Raritan Valley Group

With Volkswagen agreeing to a $14.7 billion federal settlement resulting from its vehicle emission scandal, a portion of the funds are being divided among the states. New Jersey’s share is $65 million. The state needs this money for urgently needed environmental actions, such as replacing diesel busses with clean ones, building electric vehicle charging stations, electrifying our ports and much more. But, Gov. Christie must formally ask for this money by March 2017 and identify a lead agency to manage these funds.  Incredibly he may not, perhaps because it would be an admission that New Jersey is warming due in part to man-made climate change, and he has been loathe to acknowledge that.

Time is running out before NJ loses this money, so we need to let Gov. Murphy know that New Jersey wants this $65 million, and that we can put it to important use.

You can help us take action by calling Gov. Murphy’s office (609-292-6000) or writing to him (http://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact) and urge him to designate a lead agency so New Jersey can claim these funds and put an action plan in place.

$65 million is there for the asking – it would be reckless and irresponsible not to claim it.
