River Cleanup

Two kayakers enjoying the GVP River Cleanup Day!

Two people in a canoe enjoying the water and working hard at the GVP annual river clean up.

The Governor Pinchot Group holds an annual river cleanup every September, led by our coordinator Robin Broderick. Club members and other volunteers have a fun day paddling canoes down the Susquehanna River. We haul items out of the river and also pick up trash on the islands south of the I-81 bridge. Lunch and supplies are provided by the GVP Group. On one recent trip, we picked up over 500 plastic bottles, almost as many pieces of Styrofoam, and many other items. Environmental science majors from Dickinson College, along with their professor, joined other volunteers using boats donated from Blue Mountain Outfitters to make the event a huge success. Thanks to everyone that participated! We look forward to seeing you on the next River Cleanup – check out our Calendar of Events for dates and details.
