Taking Action to Elect Climate Champions

The stakes going into this year’s election could not be higher. Elections have consequences and, win or lose, this election will have major consequences for our climate, our democracy, and our health. That’s why the Sierra Club is running an unprecedented program to mobilize each one of our 3.8 million members and supporters to vote for climate action in November.

As the nation’s most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization, we are working to lead a massive mobilization to elect environmental champions at every level of government. To do this, we launched our Victory Corps program, embedding more than 40 Sierra Club staffers in targeted must-win races across the country.

The Sierra Club is also participating in Green Wave 2020, a program of the nation’s five leading environmental organizations, and is working across the country to organize our collective membership to volunteer in support of proven candidates and climate champions.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic means this campaign work looks different than in previous years, but our staff are doing more powerful work than ever before. All of us, from our Victory Corps organizers to our incredible volunteers, are dedicated to doing the work necessary to elect champions who will take bold action on climate.

Thus far, our organizers and volunteers have put in thousands of hours of work to mobilize in support of climate champions and support their campaigns. Here are just a few of the things volunteers have said:

Dan M. (AZ): “The past four years have been a catastrophe for our climate, health, and democracy… I'm dropping everything to help win this election!”

Conny S. (CO): “We need to return to a respect for the diversity of lives and Indigenous justice.”

Conrad L. (CA): “California is losing valuable forest land, and we cannot sit by and watch any longer.”

Harvey S. (MI): “We are fighting for the future of our grandchildren.”

Already, Victory Corps volunteers have completed more than 800 shifts -- that’s more than 2,000 volunteer hours! -- and have made more than 35,000 calls to recruit Sierra Club volunteers to plug in directly with our climate champions’ campaigns.

The prospect of another four years under Donald Trump is dire. But the work of our amazing Sierra Club volunteers gives me hope and confidence that we will reelect our endorsed climate champions, and elect new ones, in November.

When we work together, our work is powerful -- and we need you with us. Every conversation we have with volunteers and voters, and every vote for climate champions cast, is a step in the right direction. With just days to go before Election Day, we will continue to organize, make phone calls, and get out the vote for candidates. We’ll continue to demand equity, environmental justice, and climate justice -- and take those demands to the ballot box.

We need to send a clear message this November and reject the anti-environment and anti-science Trump agenda. To do that, we need everyone on board. Here are two actions you can take right now:

1. Join our network of volunteers working to elect climate champions.

      • Text VICTORY to 69866

 2. Add your name as a Biden Climate Voter!

If we work together, we will win together.
