Keystone XL is Canceled. What’s Next? Get Involved to #BuildBackFossilFree

After being sworn in last week, the Biden administration took immediate action on the climate crisis, including rescinding the “presidential permit” for the Keystone XL (KXL) tar sands pipeline, axing the project once and for all.

It was an incredible moment for our movement, and we all should take the time to reflect on its magnitude. For over a decade, Indigenous leaders, landowners, and their allies stood on the frontlines to ensure this pipeline was never built. We marched in the streets, lobbied elected officials, and argued in the courtrooms. Make no mistake: It was this movement, and the power of the people, that stopped KXL!

Now, it's time to keep the momentum going and keep working for climate justice.

President Biden has committed to #buildbackbetter—and that means putting a stop to the expansion of oil and gas drilling, growing a clean energy economy, and truly moving beyond dirty fossil fuels.

Please join me in celebrating that this administration kept a campaign promise on day one by rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline. And join me in rallying for continued climate action, and in calling for the administration to #BuildBackFossilFree.

Building back fossil free includes:

Like Keystone XL, the proposed Line 3 and DAPL are massive tar sands and oil pipelines that pose grave risks to our waterways and climate. The Biden administration can and must take swift action to reverse the decisions to approve Line 3 and DAPL without further environmental review.

And all of this starts with all of us. Let’s get to work.

Mobilize to #StopLine3

For years, Indigenous-led resistance has fought this project on the front lines. We need to continue to support their efforts and lift up their voices. Now more than ever, we need you to help to ensure that this dirty tar sands pipeline does not threaten Minnesota’s clean water and our climate. Here’s how you can be a leader in this fight:

  1. Sign the petition: Tell President Biden: #StopLine3 Pipeline Construction Now!
  2. Support frontline partners: Here is a list of ways to support, created by partners at the frontlines in Northern Minnesota.
  3. Watch and Share: Check out this Line 3 video calling for a halt to pipeline construction. Also, follow those on the frontlines on social media for updates, and share their posts with your networks. Support #NoDAPL

Expanding the Dakota Access Pipeline poses a serious threat to Indigenous communities and their drinking water, and the climate. We have seen courts side with us against this dirty project, yet pipeline company Energy Transfer Partners is still pushing ahead on expansion. It’s time to send a clear message to the Biden Administration: Reject DAPL just like KXL.

  1. Sign petition: Tell President Biden: Shut Down The Dakota Access Pipeline. Now.
  2. Watch and share: The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and EarthJustice released a video,“Tȟokáta Hé Miyé (My Name Is Future),” calling on President Biden to shut down DAPL just as he canceled KXL.

Ban Oil and Gas Exports

Massive export proposals are driving new markets for dirty fuels. Communities living near oil and gas infrastructure must live with the pollution and health risks created by producing fossil fuels for export overseas. As our domestic demand for energy decreases, we should not burden communities with the risks of ongoing or even increased extraction for use elsewhere. Now is NOT the time to expand markets or export our climate pollution. Now IS the time for the Biden Administration to ban oil and gas exports and protect our communities.

  1. Sign petition: Tell President Biden: Act To Halt Crude Oil And Fracked Gas Exports Immediately.
  2. Watch and share: Every step of the way, oil and gas drilling puts the clean air and water, health, and safety of communities from the Permian Basin to the Gulf Coast at risk. Watch: Fracking Harms Permian Basin and Gulf Coast Communities.
