Savannah River Group members serve residents in Augusta, GA and surrounding areas. We have focused most of our conservation activities on Savannah River issues. We are part of the Sierra Club, America's oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Join in and help us protect the Central Savannah River Area!
Activities and Events
Our monthly programs are free and open to the public. We offer hybrid monthly meetings where you have the option to join in person or on Zoom. To join us in person we meet at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 3501 Walton Way Extension, Augusta 30909. To join us on Zoom you must RSVP in advance at the link listed for each meeting. After you RSVP, you will receive a Zoom link via email.

[Outing] "Savannah River Shores Urban Hike" - Mar 30

Rating: 3-4 miles, 2 mph, easy Join us for a beautiful spring hike as we rediscover urban Augusta and In North Augusta, we will include Brick Pond Park, the Green Jackets baseball stadium, Hammonds Ferry, the Savannah River shoreline, and part of the North Augusta Greeneway. We will hike down to Freedom Bridge and cross over the Savannah River to downtown Augusta. Various venues will be pointed out in downtown Augusta as we make our way back to the 13th Street Bridge completing the loop to the trailhead in North Augusta. The trailhead will be the open parking lot on Center Street below the Municipal Building, the lots closest to the River (see map when registering). Limit: 12. [Outing] "Rock Dam Trail Hike" - Apr 6

Beautiful Rock Dam Trail in Mistletoe State Park makes you feel like you are in the rolling foothills. We will do a spring hike through pine uplands and hardwood bottoms and make four stream crossings. Cost: There is a $5 parking fee, but state park passes are available at your local library for free. Rating: 7 miles, 2 mph We will carpool at 9 AM from the Unitarian Church (3501 Walton Way Ext., We will hike the Oakridge Trail following portions of an interpretive boardwalk, then traverse the largest contiguous river-bottom land east of the Mississippi and view some of the largest trees you may have ever seen. Bring your lunch, water, bug spray, and hiking boots for a fascinating, all-day outdoor experience. Limit: 12 To learn more and RSVP, click here.

Celebrate Earth Day with the Savannah River Group and join us at our booth at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park (1858 Lock and Dam Rd, Augusta). We invite you to stop by and say hello, or, better yet, volunteer to help us share information about the Sierra Club, our local Savannah River Group and its activities, and encourage folks to get outdoors. Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) monitoring
Conservation Chair Frank Carl leads stream monitoring outings for our local creeks and rivers.
Generally, the outings include testing streams' pH,
dissolved oxygen, temperature, phosphate levels, and the presence of E. Coli, as well as habitat
availability, stream flow, and macroinvertebrates.

Documentary: "Hyde Park"
Filmmaker and director Michelle Hansen is developing a documentary about Hyde Park, an African American community in Augusta, GA, where residents fall ill from industrial contaminants. Surrounded by seven industrial facilities and without funds to relocate, the citizens become ativists pursuing justice with a grit that will inspire thousands of U.S. communities facing environmental racism.
