The Hoosier Chapter and Indiana Beyond Coal were well represented at Renewable Energy Day 2024. Over 200 Hoosiers from around the state turned out at the Indiana Statehouse to support renewable energy in Indiana. Chapter staff and volunteers took full advantage of the opportunity to engage with attendees and meet with legislators.

A key topic discussed with legislators was the need for community solar in Indiana.

Community solar would offer subscribers a way to receive a credit on their utility bills from part of the solar produced by a local solar array. Subscribers typically save between 5% and 20% on their electric bills.

Community solar would promote energy equity. It would give all Hoosiers a chance to participate in the clean energy transition, including those who are historically marginalized such as Black, Indigenous, People of Color and low income Hoosiers.

Independent and local community solar projects can be placed anywhere from building rooftops to empty lots. They reduce air pollution and carbon emissions, strengthen the local grid, and create good jobs.

While community solar bill HB 1193 did not receive a hearing in the House Committee on Energy, Utilities, and Telecommunications, work will continue to lay the groundwork for giving Hoosiers the choice of community solar. The Hoosier Chapter recently joined the Hoosiers for Community Solar coalition which provides an important way to continue this work with partner organizations.
