Urban Composting

The goal of this initiative is to make composting accessible for individuals and communities who want to live in a better, more sustainable environment, to help combat climate change.

Imagine how much food waste we produce in just a day, a week, a month. It just keeps adding up and ends up in our landfills creating Methane, a gas 21 times more harmful to our environment than CO2. More food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in municipal solid waste. In 2012 alone, more than 36 million tons of food waste was generated in the US, with only 5% diverted from landfills and incinerators for composting.

In an urban community, composting is not made easy. Few of us have yards or gardens where we can compost ourselves. Right now, the only options we have are to take our food waste to local farmers markets during certain time windows, or very limited food waste pick up (at a price) only for Jersey City and Hoboken. This makes it very difficult for the average working household to be environmentally conscious. Composting shouldn’t be a chore. It should be as easy as throwing out the trash. This is already the case in many cities throughout the NorthWest. Change is also starting to happen in communities throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. They are voluntary programs; however, our goal is to eventually make composting available to everyone in Hudson County, as readily as picking up your trash.
