BOSTON, MA -- Sierra Club organizers and multiple advocacy groups will host a viewing event during the solar eclipse in efforts to stress threats to the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts National Marine Monuments. The event will draw speakers from multiple environmental advocacy groups and Boston residents who will highlight the importance of public lands and marine protections for the state’s economy, wildlife and residents.

The event comes just days before Zinke’s final monument recommendation, which puts marine and public lands monuments on the chopping block. This gathering has a specific focus on marine monuments near Massachusetts-- though Zinke signaled threats of land and cultural sites in other states. Trump ordered Zinke to review tens of monuments, both land and marine, in May and 2.7 million offered public comment on the action-- 98% which supported keeping protections for national monuments.

What: “Don't Let Trump Eclipse Our Progress!” A community event with nonprofit partners and residents stressing the threats to marine monuments near the East Coast during the 2017 solar eclipse.

When: Monday, August 21 at 1:30  p.m.

Where: Christopher Columbus Park, Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA, 02110.

Who:Sierra Club, Environmental League of Massachusetts, Conservation Law Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Trustees of Reservation, Humane Society of the United States, and Women Working for Oceans.

Note: This event  concurrent with a partial solar eclipse in Boston. Remember: it's unsafe to look directly at an eclipse (even a partial one) without sufficient eye protection. ISO-certified eclipse glasses are in high demand these days, but we will have a few pairs to share on Monday.
