RALEIGH, NC -- Regulators will hold a hearing tonight in the Lincoln County Commissioners Hearing Room to gather public feedback on Duke Energy’s plan to add additional fracked gas capacity at the Lincoln County Combustion Turbine Station in Stanley. Duke is asking to begin construction in 2018 and have the new operations online in 2020, despite acknowledging the region won’t need any new combustion turbines until 2025.

The Sierra Club, in conjunction with the Southern Environmental Law Center and the Natural Resources Defense Council, filed a motion earlier this month to intervene to stop this unnecessary addition to our dirty fuel infrastructure.

In response, Dave Rogers, Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign Representative for North Carolina, released the following statement:

"Duke Energy is rushing to burn more fracked gas in Lincoln County because they know that wind and solar energy are getting cheaper and making their gas plants obsolete. There’s no reason to burn the dirty, dangerous fuels of the last century when we have reliable access to clean, renewable energy that’s getting cheaper by the day. Tonight, Lincoln County residents can tell Duke Energy that they would rather breathe clean air than burn dirty fuels."
