WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, a White House spokesperson announced Donald Trump wants to impose a 20% tax on imports from Mexico to help pay for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

In response, Ilana Solomon, director of the Sierra Club’s Responsible Trade Program released the following statement:

"Donald Trump has just outlined a vision for trade that is rooted in xenophobia -- he's directly and explicitly using trade policy against immigrants. Instead, we need a new, equitable approach to trade that supports workers and good jobs, reduces inequality, and tackles environmental challenges like climate change - both at home and abroad. We will push for this new trade vision while opposing any anti-immigrant trade policy that seeks to wall off our country."
