WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, news broke that the Trump Administration will be delaying a final decision on the Paris Climate Agreement until after the G-7 Summit at the end of May.

The Paris Climate Agreement has been formally joined by over 140 nations, and participation in the Agreement is supported by nearly 70 percent of Americans nationwide and by a majority in all 50 states. Regardless of the U.S.’s decision, other major emitters, including China and India, have repeatedly reaffirmed their commitments to the Paris Agreement and are prepared to assume global leadership in the fight to tackle the climate crisis.

In response, Sierra Club Global Climate Policy Director John Coequyt released the following statement:

“Nearly 70 percent of Americans, hundreds of businesses and investors, and nearly every single  nation in the world supports the Paris Agreement and the U.S. fulfilling its promises. When it comes to the Paris Agreement, there is no question: the U.S. must fulfill its international commitments in full.

“Exploiting the flexibility of the Paris Agreement to reduce our commitment, or even going so far as to pull us out, would be a disaster for the United States because it would provoke international blowback, harm our global leadership role, and threaten the health and safety of all families in this country."
