WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the State Department announced a new $500 million grant to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a fund created by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to provide financial support for developing countries to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate disruption.

In response, Sierra Club Global Climate Policy Director John Coequyt released the following statement:

“By following through on our commitments to support the Green Climate Fund, the State Department has ensured the United States will remain a reliable partner with both the poor and vulnerable countries that are already struggling to address the impacts of climate change and the more than 40 other nations that have contributed to the fund.

“This new contribution will help the Green Climate Fund provide the critical support poorer and more vulnerable countries need to tackle the climate crisis, and the United States must continue to meet its commitments in the years to come.”
