WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. government released major scientific reports today that further strengthen the connection between human activity and the climate crisis. As part of the Congressionally mandated National Climate Assessment, which is required by law to be issued every four years, the government released a series of documents today that includes a final version of the Climate Science Special report.

The report, released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, supplies an account of how Americans are already suffering the effects of a changing climate, and reiterates that global temperatures are warming at an unprecedented rate due to human activity. These findings directly contradict the policies and narrative of the Trump administration, and raise troubling questions about the the extent to which administration figures are captured by fossil fuel interests and other corporate polluters.

In response, Sierra Club Climate Policy Director Liz Perera released the following statement:

“The U.S. government and the scientific consensus have a message for Donald Trump: it’s time to wake up on climate change. These scientific studies make clear that human activity is driving the climate crisis to new dangerous extremes, and that we must act with urgency to cut carbon pollution and boost the booming clean energy economy powered by wind and solar.

“The Climate Science Special report is a direct rebuke to an administration which has clearly been captured by the narrow profit interests of the fossil fuel industry and other corporate polluters. It’s time for Donald Trump, Scott Pruitt, and the other deniers in this Administration to take science, and their responsibilities, seriously and radically shift course.”
