TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Today, the national Sierra Club Political Committee launched “Fossil Fools 2018”, the beginning of an aggressive midterm electoral ad campaign targeting 10 Congressional Republican candidates, including Governor Rick Scott, for defeat.

Scott and the other “Fossil Fools” have made their allegiance to corporate polluters clear by working repeatedly against climate action and clean air and water protections. Rick Scott denies the scientific consensus on climate change, and, as governor, his policy of cutting funding and enforcement at the agencies that protect our health and the environment has contributed to Florida’s devastating toxic algae water crisis. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Scott’s mid-year campaign report shows he received at least $880,000 in a “gusher” of contributions from oil, gas, and energy executives.

“Governor Rick Scott and his fellow Fossil Fools in Congress act day in and day out with corporate polluters instead of their constituents, allowing polluters to defile clean air and water with impunity while ignoring the climate crisis,” said Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune. “Fortunately, voters have an opportunity to bar Fossil Fools from the Senate in November and elect leaders who will boldly rewrite the rules of the economy so it works for our families, the middle class, and our kids again.”

Voters can learn more about the Fossil Fools and on FossilFools2018.com.

The Fossil Fools website is accompanied by an aggressive social media and digital ad buy nationwide in the Fossil Fools’ districts, including the State of Florida, informing their constituents of how frequently these candidates work with polluters instead of families and our kids.

“Our aggressive ad campaign will make clear to Floridians that Rick Scott is a Fossil Fool who will do anything to help polluters instead of his constituents,” said Sierra Club National Political Director Ariel Hayes. “There’s more to come, so stay tuned as the 2018 midterms approach.”

As part of the Sierra Club Political Committee’s ongoing 2018 Fossil Fools campaign, additional, targeted ad buys will be announced in the future.

The worst of the Fossil Fools up for election to the Senate in November 2018 are Ted Cruz (TX), Dean Heller (NV), and Rick Scott (FL).

In the House, the list includes Representatives Barbara Comstock (VA-10), Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48), Tom McClintock (CA-04), Steve Knight (CA-25), David Brat (VA-07), Mike Coffman (CO-06), and Peter Roskam (IL-06).
