ICYMI: Keystone XL Developer Puts Communities at Risk of Spills Yet Again

This weekend, it was reported that an inspection by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) revealed that TC Energy - formerly TransCanada - likely violated pipeline safety standards by failing to provide suitable coating material at numerous locations along the Keystone Pipeline, the southern leg of the company’s controversial proposed Keystone XL.

The Keystone Pipeline sprung a leak in Marshall County, South Dakota in November 2017, spilling more than 250,000 gallons of oil. The pipeline also had a dozen spills in its first year of operation alone.

In response, Catherine Collentine, Associate Director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign, released the following statement:

“New company name, same egregious safety record. Whatever they call themselves, TC Energy can’t outrun the obvious fact that they can’t be trusted to move dirty tar sands through our communities and waterways. This latest violation is further proof that the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline should never be built.”
