Reno, NV-- Today, Nevada Sen. Cortez Masto introduced a bill to eliminate the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) practice of leasing low and no potential public lands for oil and gas drilling. The goal of the legislation is to end the speculative leasing, mitigate environmental risk, and reduce opportunity costs associated with leasing where lands could be better managed for recreation, conservation and responsible clean energy development. Read the full bill here.

In response to the introduction of the legislation, Brian Beffort, Chapter Director the Nevada Sierra Club released the following statement:

“We applaud Senator Cortez Masto for taking on the Trump administration’s corrupt practice of leasing millions of acres of public lands for the sole benefit of fossil fuel industry insiders. While these landscapes and waters sit in the hands of oil and gas companies, Western communities are losing out. These places provide recreation and tourism income, important wildlife habitat, and priceless natural services like clean air, water and carbon sequestration. This bill is a promising effort to protect our public lands and make these places a part of the climate solution.”
