Washington, DC -- Tonight, Donald Trump will be coronated as the Republican nominee for president after a primary process which changed rules to prevent serious challengers. During the Republican National Convention (RNC), the climate crisis was mentioned only in brief passing. Meanwhile, in the middle of a pandemic that has killed more than 180,000 in the United States alone, the country is facing deadly wildfires across the West and a historic hurricane that brought “unsurvivable storm surge” struck the Gulf.

In an unprecedented use of federal property for political purposes, Trump will give his acceptance speech at the White House, followed by a fireworks display over the National Mall, a national park. During his tenure, Donald Trump has directed the largest rollback ever of public lands.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is the worst president ever for our clean air and water, public health, and the climate. His celebration with a shameless display at a national park as though it were a holiday while families face the realities of the climate crisis he has exacerbated is a national disgrace. He must -- and will -- be replaced by Joe Biden.”
