Amy Coney Barrett No Da la Talla para la Corte Suprema

Washington, DC — Durante el tercer día de sus audiencias de confirmación para la Corte Suprema, la Jueza Amy Coney Barrett rechazó hoy dos veces reconocer y aceptar la realidad de la crisis climática.

Tras sus comentarios ayer que ella “no es una científica” y que “no tiene opiniones firmes” sobre el cambio climático, hoy los extendió diciendo que “no es competente para opinar sobre las causas del cambio climático”, que no cree que sus “opiniones sobre el calentamiento global ni sobre el cambio climático sean relevantes para la labor que haría como jueza” y calificó el cambio climático como “un asunto muy contencioso de debate público”.

La crisis climática es uno de los problemas más apremiantes de nuestra era, y el 97% de los científicos está de acuerdo con sus causas. Los expertos predicen que los huracanes, sequías e incendios que han devastado Estados Unidos han costado miles de millones de dólares en daños solo este año. La Corte Suprema es responsable de dilucidar leyes ambientales fundamentales, como la Ley de Agua Limpia, la Ley de Aire Limpio y la Ley de Política Nacional Ambiental. El tribunal ya ha aceptado decidir sobre al menos un caso acerca de la crisis climática en su próximo mandato.

Como respuesta, la directora del Programa de Democracia del Sierra Club, Courtney Hight, emitió la siguiente declaración:

“La ciencia se acepta o se rechaza. Los repetidos rechazos de Amy Coney Barrett de aceptar la ciencia climática prueban una vez más que no está preparada para servir en la Corte Suprema, y el Senado tiene que rechazar su nominación, sin más”.

Barrett Repeatedly Refused To Accept The Climate Crisis

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, during the third day of her confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court, Judge Amy Coney Barrett twice refused to acknowledge and accept the reality of the climate crisis. Following her remarks yesterday that she is “not a scientist” and “has no firm views” on climate change, today she expanded to say she is “not competent to opine on what causes global warming or not,” doesn’t think that her “views on global warming or climate change are relevant to the job I would do as a judge,” and called climate change a “very contentious matter of public debate.”

The climate crisis is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and 97% of scientists have reached consensus on its cause. Experts predict that the unprecedented hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires that have ravaged the United States have cost billions of dollars in damage this year alone. The Supreme Court is responsible for bedrock environmental laws like the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Court is already slated to hear at least one case on the climate crisis in the next term.

In response, Sierra Club Democracy Program Director Courtney Hight released the following statement:

"You either accept science or reject it. Amy Coney Barrett repeatedly refusing to accept climate science further proves that she is unfit to serve on the Supreme Court, and the Senate must reject her nomination, full stop.”
