WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, it was announced that President-elect Joe Biden plans to nominate Brenda Mallory, current head of regulatory affairs at the Southern Environmental Law Center, to lead the Council on Environmental Quality. Mallory brings more than three decades of experience working on environmental policy issues to the role.

In response, Sierra Club President Ramon Cruz released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement that Brenda Mallory will head the Council on Environmental Quality is yet another encouraging sign that President-elect Biden will prioritize a whole-of-government response to the climate crisis that centers equity and justice across all federal climate action. After four years of rewriting environmental review regulations to line corporate polluters’ pockets, the CEQ is in dire need of a leader who understands the urgency of the climate crisis and the disastrous effect it has on frontline communities. We have full faith that Mallory is that leader and that she will commit to coordinating and scaling clean energy and infrastructure projects that align with an aggressive climate justice agenda.”

“The Sierra Club applauds Biden’s nomination of Brenda Mallory and looks forward to working with her and the rest of the administration to advance solutions to the climate crisis which centers  environmental justice and prioritizes real solutions for the communities who, for decades, have suffered disproportionately from the effects of pollution and climate change.”
