PRESS CONFERENCE: First-of-its-Kind Report Highlights America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act Role in Climate, 30x30 Efforts

Contact

Utah— On Thursday, Feb. 4, climate experts will host a telepresser to release a new report on how the America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act would play a vital role in slowing the extinction and climate crises, and helping to achieve the Biden administration’s goal of protecting 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030.

The findings highlight the significant benefits of the legislation in controlling the country’s carbon budget, improving habitat and biodiversity, and reaching 30% protections for lands and waters scientists stress is necessary to tackle climate change.

Additional background:

Days after President Biden signed an executive order to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030, experts will unveil a report to show the significant role America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act would play in achieving those safeguards. This new, multi-organization report on the benefits of the protections makes clear these landscapes would be pivotal in carbon storage and sequestration, and habitat protections necessary to increase biodiversity and slow the extinction crisis.

As a large expansive landscape that remains in its natural state, the lands in America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act comprise a prime piece of what scientists say is needed today – protecting 30% of America’s land and water by the year 2030 in order to prevent catastrophic collapse of the natural systems on which life on earth relies. These lands are also a vital link in the interconnected chain of largely undisturbed lands running from the Grand Canyon to Glacier, providing corridors for wildlife, birds and plants that are essential for them to survive the extinction crisis.
