A Return to Normal Cannot Include a Return of Mass Shootings
Oakland, CA -- On Thursday evening, eight people were murdered in a mass shooting near Indianapolis, IN. As of today, there have been 147 mass shootings in 2021, with at least 45 mass shootings in April alone.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“A return to normal. For more than a year, so many of us have dreamt of returning to life before the pandemic, longing for a time where going out in the world, to your office, to meet up with friends, or to eat a meal outside of your home was a normal part of life. But as we daydream about life without COVID we have forgotten the other pandemic gripping our nation: gun violence plaguing every inch of our nation.
“This week was every bit the normal America has long been. But accepting gun violence and death as a part of life in this country cannot be an inheritance we leave to yet another generation. Our leaders must finally find their courage and take the necessary action we the people have demanded, we have marched for, and we so desperately need.
“Every person deserves the right to walk freely in their community, to live without the fear of violence. The Sierra Club will continue to demand our leaders take action to make this is a just, equitable, and safe society for every single one of us.”
