Washington, DC — La Cámara de Representantes aprobó hoy por segunda vez el proyecto de ley HR 51 por el cual se otorgaría la estadidad al Distrito de Columbia (DC). Esta semana, la Casa Blanca apoyó formalmente que el DC se convierta en el estado número 51 de la Unión.
En 2017, el Sierra Club aprobó una resolución formal en apoyo a la estadidad del DC, recalcando que “los derechos de los residentes del Distrito de Columbia quedan violados cuando el Congreso impone su voluntad sobre temas locales —incluyendo importantes asuntos ambientales que confronta el DC— y niega a los ciudadanos que viven en el Distrito su representación democrática en temas federales en ambas cámaras del Congreso”.
La única congresista de DC, la Rep. Eleanor Norton, no tiene el poder del voto en la Cámara de Representantes, y los residentes del DC pagan más en impuestos federales per cápita que cualquier estado.
Como respuesta, la presidenta del Capítulo de DC del Sierra Club, Catherine Plume, emitió el siguiente comunicado:
“El Sierra Club aplaude a la Congresista Norton por su incansable labor para lograr la estadidad del DC y cumplir con los derechos democráticos y de representación de todos los habitantes del Distrito. Ya es hora de que los más de 700.000 residentes del Distrito tengan completa autonomía en las urnas y el poder de decidir cómo sus funcionarios electos lidian con los mayores retos y gastan sus impuestos. El Sierra Club insta al Senado a hacer lo propio y aprobar el HR 51 de inmediato”.

Sierra Club Applauds House Approving DC Statehood
WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Today, the House of Representatives passed HR 51 for the second time. Earlier this week, the White House formally endorsed HR 51 and issued a statement of “full support” for DC as the 51st state.
In 2017, the Sierra Club passed a formal resolution in support of DC Statehood, noting that “the rights of the residents of the District of Columbia are violated when the US Congress imposes its will on local matters -- including important environmental issues facing the District -- and denies citizens who live in the District of Columbia voting representation on federal issues in both houses of the US Congress.”
The District’s only member of Congress, Congressmember Norton, has no voting power on the floor of the House of Representatives, and District residents pay more federal tax dollars per capita than any US state.
In response, Sierra Club DC Chapter Chair Catherine Plume released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club applauds Congressmember Norton for her tireless leadership to ensure DC statehood and fulfill the democratic rights and representation for all who call DC home. It is well past time for the more than 700,000 District residents to have full autonomy at the ballot box and the power to decide how their own elected officials address today’s biggest challenges and spend their tax dollars. The Sierra Club calls on the Senate to meet this moment and pass HR 51 now.”
