WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) announced he will not seek leadership reelection in the 118th Congress but will continue to serve in Congress.

In response, Sierra Club President Ramon Cruz released the following statement:

"On behalf of Sierra Club members, volunteers, and staff across the country, I celebrate and congratulate House Majority Leader Hoyer on over three decades of leadership in Congress. Rep. Hoyer has been a critical ally in our mission to serve and protect communities and promote a liveable planet for all.

“Rep. Hoyer has been a leader in the true sense of the word. Time and again, he has stood up to corporate polluters and special interests, putting our right to drink clean water, breathe clean air, and have a liveable climate instead of corporate profits. His work alongside the Gwich’in Nation and other Tribal communities to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from destructive drilling is just one example of Rep. Hoyer’s commitment to putting people over profits.

“In collaboration with other key leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Hoyer has been a key member in the fight to enact policies that address our changing climate, preserve and protect our natural and wild spaces, while defending direct attacks to our democracy and system of governance."
