BOISE, ID -- As part of a settlement deal released yesterday, Idaho Power announced its intention to close the two units at Nevada’s North Valmy Generating Station several years ahead of schedule. Idaho Power plans to close Unit 1 in 2019 and Unit 2 in 2025. Idaho Power’s current schedule depreciates Units 1 and 2 in 2031 and 2035, respectively.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Duke Energy Progress today filed a request to raise customers’ rates, in large part to pay cleanup and storage costs for the utility’s coal ash waste.
Washington, DC -- Today, Donald Trump fired off a series of tweets complaining about government funding, when in reality, it is his budget that included cuts for the programs mentioned, and it’s his allies in Congress that have the ability to either shut down the government or keep the lights on.

Somerset, MA -- The Brayton Point Power Station, Massachusetts’ last operating coal-fired power plant, ended operations today. The 1,500 megawatt power plant, once the largest in the region, had been in operation for 50 years. The retirement was announced in 2013 and was the 150th coal-fired power plant across the country to announce retirement since 2010.

Columbus – Last week, Republican Rep. Rick Carfagna introduced House Bill 239 and Republican Senators Peterson and Terhar introduced Senate Bill 155 which are designed to require Ohio’s electricity customers to pay higher electric bills for decades to keep two money-losing coal-burning plants operating. Those coal-burning power plants, Kyger Creek in Ohio and Clifty Creek in Indiana, were built in the 1950s, can’t compete in today’s energy market, and are jointly-owned by AEP, FirstEnergy, DP&L, and Duke.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals put a hold on a polluter backed case against the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) clean water protections that limited toxic wastewater discharges from coal plants. The hold comes after a slew of motions from Donald Trump’s EPA Administrator seeking to pause litigation on important clean air and water protections in order to “review” them, which is widely seen by public health advocates, environmental organizations, and environmental justice groups as a ploy to weaken or scrap them.
CHARLESTON, WV-- On Friday, May 26, the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia found that conductivity pollution from Fola Coal’s Monoc #2 Surface Mine, located along the southern portion of the Leatherwood Creek watershed, violated key state and federal water quality protections. The mine is located in Nicholas and Clay counties and dumps mine waste into valley fills located in tributaries to Leatherwood Creek.
