NEWTON, MA. – This week, the Newton City Council unanimously passed a resolution requiring  the city to avoid the purchase or use of products containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, called PFAS or “forever chemicals.” This marks the first city resolution against purchasing products with PFAS in Massachusetts, following the first town resolution passed in Brookline in 2023.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its long-awaited National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter (PM2.5) -- commonly known as soot -- which will lower the annual standard from 12 mcg/m3 to 9 mcg/m3. Soot pollution is shown to increase the risk of asthma, heart attacks, stroke, cancer, and premature death, and nationally, this new standard is expected to prevent up to 4,500 premature deaths, 290,000 lost workdays per year, and result in as much as $43 billion in net health benefits in 2032.

Fifty-six climate and environmental justice organizations sent a letter urging Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to oppose H.R. 1130 – Unlocking Our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2023 – and any other efforts that would accelerate the expansion of gas exports, known as LNG. H.R. 1130 is expected to be one of a number of bills considered during the Republican-led “Energy Week,” which begins on February 12.
