Humanities Prep had a full day of adventure with NYCICO and Catrock leaders

After a year and a half of remote and hybrid learning, Humanities Prep 9th and 10th graders were ready to head out for a hike on a sunny November Sunday. 41 Humanities Prep students left Chelsea at 9:30am sharp headed for Rockland Lake State Park for a full day of adventures. The high school students split into 4 hiking groups each with a Sierra Club member, school staff, and a Catrock leader. After swapping a hiking story or two and reviewing Leave No Trace principles, the teens were ready to hit the trail.

Through the inclines, the beautiful fall foliage, an overlook of the Hudson River, a bit of mud (and some sad white-sneaker owners), and lots of great trail conversations, the hiking groups completed the full 3 mile out and back in no time. Then it was time to eat. Our group headed to the Rockland Lake picnic area where Prep teachers had spent the entire morning barbequing chicken, plant-based burgers, hot dogs, and preparing salads and mac and cheese. Let's not forget the hot chocolate and smores! Some enjoyed chatting at the picnic tables while others played soccer and football.

The group returned to NYC with full hearts - and stomachs. Many students said that spending time together in person was something to celebrate, and are looking forward to the next outing!
