PS 159x goes orienteering at Westmoreland Sanctuary!

On May 5, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from PS 159x in Bronx, NY had the opportunity to learn a new skill- orienteering!  When we arrived at Westmoreland Sanctuary, there was a big orienteering race happening, hosted by Hudson Valley Orienteering.  The education director was able to guide us and teach us all about the sport-  how to read a compass, putting Red Fred in the Shed, how to look at landmarks on the map, the numbers associated with the controls, how to put the finger stick in the control and wait until it beeps.  We took on the easiest course since it was out first time-- a 2.1k White course- and finished in 14th place out of 17 teams with a time of 93:30.  Students went home so happy knowing that they had tried something new!
