Samara Community School Goes Maple Sugaring at Westmoreland Sanctuary!

Three Bronx agencies joined up for great day outside at Westmoreland Sanctuary!  It is the perfect time of year to learn about maple sugaring!  From tree to their plates, the students saw the entire process of how maple sugar is made!  Students learned how to identify a sugar maple tree, how to tap the tree and install a metal pail to collect the sap, how to boil the sap to turn it into syrup, and how to filter the syrup so it is ready to enjoy!  Students then enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast with maple syrup made at Westmoreland Sanctuary.

To end the day, we went on a hike.  The trail we choose was much steeper than we thought!  But we found a great rock to rest and make it our summit for the day.  We did a 5 minute sensory hike where students needed to walk in silence and really use their sense of sight and hearing to observe.

At our closing circle, students discussed what they heard and saw on the silent hike.  We also talked about giving back to the Earth, as the Earth always gives to us- one way which we learned today through the maple sap it gives us!
