Samara Community School at Westmoreland Sanctuary!

3-6-26: 4th grade students at Samara Community School have been answering the question, "What lessons can we learn from how indigenous peoples of the Eastern woodlands navigated the world around them?"  Today they were able to learn all about maple sugaring!  They practiced drilling into a tree to experience what it is like to tap a tree, dumped the sap into buckets, and carried the buckets using a yoke.  They saw how to boil the sap in order to make maple syrup or how the a hot rock can be placed on the water to boil the sap.  They also tasted maple syrup and pancake syrup and compared the two different types of syrup.    Students also learned about the evolution of light and make their own candles.  (Which will connect in the colonization unit).  They learned how much work it is to make hand dipped candles!
