DC law previously required the District government to purchase and lease only electric vehicles instead of gas- or diesel-burning ones, starting in 2026. However, Mayor Bowser and the DC Council have delayed that requirement to 2031.
A new Sierra Club policy brief outlines how the DC government can start to transition to EVs now by prioritizing light-duty vehicles, which can be electrified at little or no additional cost.
