Many of you likely separate your recycling from your trash, but do you know what actually happens to them after they are taken away?
Please join us on Wednesday October 1 to learn where the trash and recycling go in Bartholomew County. Scott Keene of the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District Citizens Advisory Committee will give the lowdown on landfills and recycling, and you will walk away with a new appreciation for the complexities of waste management, and hopefully a new “trash” vocabulary to share with your friends.
Wednesday, October 1 6:00 - 7:30 Red Room of the Bartholomew County Public Library

Anderson Falls Nature Preserve?
2025 is the Winding Water’s 25th Anniversary! To celebrate, we are highlighting Anderson Falls, a State Nature Preserve in Eastern Bartholomew County. A description of Anderson Falls taken from the IN.gov website:
“This preserve contains mature mesic and dry-mesic upland forest through which flows a 1/2 mile stretch of Fall Fork of Clifty Creek. The mesic upland forest is carpeted by a rich diversity of spring wildflowers; the dry-mesic upland forest harbors summer species such as tall coreopsis under majestic white oaks. The focal point of the park is the 14-foot high waterfall that occurs where Louisville Limestone overlies the less resilient Waldron Shale. This site was well known by geologists prior to the turn of the century for the remarkably well preserved Silurian Age fauna contained in the fossiliferous Waldron Shale layer. Access to the trail requires crossing the stream above the falls.”
Anderson Falls is managed by Bartholomew County, but is also protected by the state of Indiana from any future sale or development. The Winding Waters Group spearheaded the State Nature Preserve certification of the park, accomplished in 2004.
My name is Daniel Aker. I moved to Columbus a year ago after graduating from Indiana University Bloomington. As a student I enjoyed hiking the areas around Bloomington, as well as Indiana's many state parks. I was happy to find the Winding Waters Group in Columbus to continue hiking with like-minded people. I have enjoyed getting to know the other members, as well as exploring new natural areas around Bartholomew County.
One Winding Waters event that stands out is the end-of-summer bonfire and butterfly walk at Dennis Tibbett's rural acreage in August. Walking through the woods and fields, I was thrilled to learn so much about butterflies and wildflowers from our guide, Doug Johnson. This has only motivated me to explore and learn more about beautiful Central Indiana.
Please join us on our monthly hikes and programs. I look forward to meeting you.
