As the new Executive Committee Chair of the Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter, I’m delighted to invite you to our Spring Briefing this year.
Our seasonal briefings are a great way to connect with likeminded folks across the state, hear from our volunteer leaders and staff on the work we’ve been doing — and learn more about what is to come.

America Has No Kings—Join Us on the Streets on March 28!
No one is above the law, not even the President.
Yet Trump and his power-hungry allies have increased attacks on our democracy and communities. They've stripped protections for our climate, air, and water. It's overwhelming, but it's also inspiring more and more people to take action. That's why, on March 28, we're urging you and everyone you know who cares about protecting our future to turn out and say No Kings!

We live in a world defined by pollution and waste that outpace the planet’s ability to absorb them. As forests are cleared and oceans are overfished, it becomes increasingly clear that we have not yet learned how to balance our growing demands with the Earth’s finite resources.
At the heart of this imbalance is consumerism, a mindset shaped by an economic system that equates profit with progress. Many of us are taught, often subtly, that growth is always good and that acquiring more is a sign of success, even when that growth comes at an environmental and human cost.
This mindset does not remain abstract. It can filter into our homes, our habits, and our relationships. It can shape how we seek comfort, how we define ourselves, and how we fill both our physical and emotional spaces. To understand how deeply consumerism affects our lives, we have to look not only at what it does to the planet, but also at how it quietly reshapes the way we live, connect, and find meaning.

The “Seedlings” Essay Contest
Sierra, the national magazine of the Sierra Club, is an award-winning publication focused on stories about exploring, protecting, and living in harmony with the natural world.
In 2025, the magazine launched "Seedlings," a special issue for young readers and families, and plans to publish it every summer. This year, to coincide with the second “Seedlings,” they are hosting a national essay contest in partnership with the Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All campaign.
We would love to see some young Hoosiers take part!
I look forward to seeing you at our next Book Club!

Support Your Chapter! Watch for the March Fundraising Appeal
Change happens because people like you invest in it. Two or three times each year, you may see a letter in your mailbox from me or our Chapter Chair, inviting you to support the work of the Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter across Indiana. Asking for financial support can feel uncomfortable, but it is essential as we continue building the people power needed to protect Indiana’s environment and communities.
When you receive this letter, please take a moment to open it and learn how your donation supports our legislative advocacy, connecting our fellow Hoosiers with the outdoors, grassroots volunteer leadership, and partnerships with communities across the state. Our volunteers are the heart of this work, and your support helps provide the training, tools, and resources they need to take action and create lasting change.
Thank you and all my best,
Robyn Skuya-Boss Chapter Director
Spotted!
Sierra Club staff and volunteer leaders are passionate about getting out there and spreading the word about issues that matter to Hoosiers!

Hoosier Chapter Director Robyn Skuya-Boss spoke at a County Commissioners hearing in Mt. Vernon on March 3.
Robyn was speaking on behalf of Posey County Sierra Club members opposing the proposed restrictive solar setbacks.
On March 8, the Uplands Network led a hike in a historic part of the Hoosier National Forest, Lick Creek.
Julie Lowe: "One of the hikers spotted this bright yellow fungus on the trail and we stopped to move a few of the leaves away. Then the hiker from the Bloomington area declared, it's Witch's Butter! Later, I sent in my photo to iNaturalist which supports that it is common in the area and am waiting for citizen science reviewers to confirm our Witch's Butter find."
On February 22, a few brave, dedicated Hoosiers trekked out to the Burdette Trail in Evansville, Indiana to enjoy the last gasp of winter and discuss the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.
The Burdette Trail connects the University of Southern Indiana to the outskirts of western Evansville in a 3.5-mile long paved trail used for biking and walking.

This month we are going back to Earth Month, April 2019!
This photo is of our Chapter Director, Robyn, back when they worked for the Indiana Beyond Coal Campaign, with their colleague Wendy. This joyous photo was taken on a glorious sunny day in Evansville, IN, at the Tristate Creation Care Pilgrimage to Vectren HQ.

Readers' Photos
Our photo this month comes from Volunteer Leader Beverly Riddle, taken in the fall of 2025 in Garfield Park.
Thank you so much, Beverly, for sharing this beautiful photo with us!
Do you have a photograph of Indiana nature — past or present, micro or macro — that you would like to share?
We'd love to see it and perhaps feature it in a future newsletter.
