Allen’s Creek State Recreation Area Turkey Trot Trail in the Hoosier National Forest is a beautiful hiking area filling a peninsula overlooking Lake Monroe in Monroe County.

The Turkey Trot Trail starts at the large parking area and boat launch at the entry gate. Sierra Club hikers were thrilled to see a handful of turkeys cross the trail as they began their hike following an old logging road out of the parking lot.

The nearly 4-mile out and back ridge trail followed through old-growth groves and a regrown former campground, hosting a variety of newly sprouted spring ephemerals, and songbirds.

The trail ended as it descended toward the Lake Monroe shoreline, where the group enjoyed sack lunches while listening to the waves lapping on the rocky shore.

While walking back to the parking area the clouds cleared as the group chatted about the variety of trees and bird calls. It was a lovely afternoon.
