Interview with Addie Hirschten

Addie Hirschten is a contemporary visionary expressionist painter, author, and public speaker.

Q1: What is your earliest memory of interacting with nature?

Running through tall grass and my mother saying "watch out for snakes."

Q2: How does the natural world influence your work as an artist?

The natural world encompasses all of our world. There is not a part of our lives that the forces of nature does not touch. Our symbiotic relationship with trees flows into every breath and beat of our hearts. Humans cannot truly separate themselves from nature. We are just one part of the intricate woven fabric of the earth. The beautiful patterns found in nature inspire all of my artwork, not only in the forms of images painted but in the spirit of celebration for life as we know it.

Q3: What role do you think artists have in helping to promote or protect nature and the environment?

Artwork can be used to call attention to the beauty of nature and to the importance of preserving it for future generations. One added benefit for artists is that when we observe nature, when we really stop to look at it to create our work, it deepens our appreciation for it.

Q4: What message do you hope people take with them from your piece(s) in the Human/Nature exhibition?

The message behind this piece is that humans sit within the embrace of nature. She holds us like a mother holds a child. We sit within the garden, the bounty of lush life surrounding and flowing through us.

Addie Hirschten's Ladies by the Fountain in San Miguel de Allende is showing at the Human/Nature exhibition.
