Team Update - Forests & Wildlife - March 2025

Forests and Wildlife

As motorized land recreation continues to explode in Minnesota with millions of additional dollars appropriated each session for more trail creation and expansion, there must be an equal focus on protecting our natural resources, wild and aquatic life and preserving quiet in nature. We need to help the DNR recommit to its mission of being the protector of our great outdoors versus solely being the promoter of extractive uses. The Forests and Wildlife Stewards in partnership with the Minnesota Public Lands Coalition have a bill introduced by Senator McEwen (SF 1245), and in the House by Representative Pursell (HF 1012) that will help to address this.

It's time for real common-sense management for motorized recreation on our state public forests. Take action by contacting your state legislators now to ask them to support this critical legislation. These bills could get scheduled for a hearing at any time. So please contact your legislator before the end of March

The Stewards’ legislative goals are:

Signage -- All trails open for use must have signs to help riders know where they can go, make enforcement easier, and protect the environment. Riders can only access properly signed trails.

Water & Native Species -- Buffers and cautious trail planning to protect the most pristine ranked waters and aquatic life, and avoid spreading invasives will be required.

Local Approval – Tribal nations, counties and townships will get advance notice that a trail is being proposed, and their approval will be required for all projects that traverse their lands.

Environmental Review -- A process for proper environment review will be required that allows for transparency and public participation. This can help to avoid building in sensitive areas, and will reduce lawsuits.
